TE 802: Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice I: Literacy
Instructor: Carla Shalaby |
TE 803: Professional Role and Teaching Practice: Social Studies
Instructor: Soo Bin Jang |
This course focused on teaching foundational literacy skills. I completed this class during my student teaching internship. Throughout the course, we wrote taught reading and writing mini-units. We also created a Book Bag project that encouraged literacy practices at home. All projects and assignments were implemented in my classroom. This course allowed me to gain experience engaging students in literacy learning, and begin applying best practices to my teaching.

This class prepared me to teach social studies concepts in meaningful and ethical ways. We learned about the importance of providing students with opportunities to engage in social justice and civic issues. In this course, we designed a comprehensive social studies unit that integrated multiple subject areas and allowed students to solve real-world problems. The teaching materials we created in this class were used in my field placement classroom, and allowed me to gain a better understanding of authentic social studies teaching and learning.

CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Technology
Instructor: Rachelle Galang and Kimberly Powell This course helped introduce me to the Master's in Educational Technology (MAET) Program. In this course, we were challenged to think of education in different ways. For example, we completed a Networked Learning Project where we learned a new skill using YouTube and online discussion forums. We reflected on our teaching and learning experiences through reading and writing reflective blog posts. This course allowed me to deepen my understanding of teaching in ways that consider Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK).

CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technologies in Education
Instructors: Janine Campbell and Edith Erickson This class built on the learning in CEP 810 by digging deeper into the TPACK (Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge) Framework. We also studied the idea of "remixing" content and curriculum to rethink the way we engage students in 21st century learning. I was also challenged to redesign learning spaces to encourage students to collaborate and think creatively. Finally, we studied the idea of "maker culture", which allows students to use digital and physical tools to solve authentic problems.

TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Instructor: Marliese Peltier |
CEP 807: Proseminar in Educational Technology
Instructors: Dr. Matthew Koehler, Sarah Keenan-Lechel, Spencer Greenhalgh, and Sukanya Moudgalya |
This class allowed me to focus on best practices in literacy instruction. I developed the skills necessary to administer pre-assessments, analyze student data to inform instruction, and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students. In this course, I identified the literacy needs of a student in my classroom. I used assessments to plan and implement differentiated instruction. Then, I analyzed post-assessments to determine if the lesson was successful and identify the student's future learning needs. This course allowed me to study best practices and learn how to plan and teach based on a student's individual needs.

This course allows me to summarize and reflect on my learning throughout the Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program. I created an online portfolio that allowed me to highlight my learning, reflect on past goals, and consider ways that I can continue to grow as an educator. My portfolio highlights my graduate studies, my goals and experience as a first grade teacher, and allows my audience to learn about my personality and interests. The process of creating an online portfolio has helped me develop effective digital communication skills and capture my learning as a graduate student.
